Training Report - Spring 2011
The training schedule is constantly updated online and announced at monthly meetings. These courses offer an excellent opportunity for all members to refresh their safety knowledge. This is especially important for newly organized members that may not have received this training. You may register on line, at the union office or by contacting the training coordinator.
We have three trainers Guy Brideau, Andrew Dominey & Geoff Hubbard that are fully certified by IHSA & will be delivering most of our programs.

New courses
Broderson training has been presented and well received in the past. A new course will be offered if there is sufficient interest. Please place your name on the list at the union office or contact the training coordinator if you are interested.
Electrical Project Supervision part one is mandatory for all 5th term apprentices (and 4th term approaching 5th). This is an excellent course for all new journeypersons who may wish to become foremen (supervisors) at some time in the future. It is also an excellent source of new information and tools for older journeypersons who may wish to be foremen.
Note:
- Confined Space and Lock & Tag courses are based on
the 2006 construction regulation changes. If you received your training prior to that a refresher is recommended.
- Shock & Arc-flash is based upon the new CSA Z462
standard for workplace electrical safety for electricians. These standards are mandatory under the OHSA and Electrical Safety Code.
- The training coordinator receives numerous calls from members looking for specific training that they may require either to work in another local or to be dispatched for work from local 303. Many feel that we are constantly running courses and that it is easy to get training at any time. This is NOT the case. We are a small local with limited funds for training. To operate effectively a minimum number of participants are required. Courses are usually offered in spring and fall and may not run if there is not sufficient interest. The best advice is to take courses when they are offered, not when you need them.
- If you are interested in any course please contact the training coordinator or speak with Kim or Debbie at the union office so you can be advised when that course is scheduled. Some courses have a limited number of spaces. Once filled it is not possible to just drop in and attend. Book early and confirm that you are scheduled for any particular course.
- Courses are not only a place to receive information but also a place to share information.
- Any suggestions on new courses to look into should go to the JCB (via Peter). Provided there is sufficient interest we will endeavour to set up or locate courses of interest to our members.
Other training notes:
- WHMIS update (mandatory yearly review) - Members are encouraged to take their update on line and send proof of training to the training coordinator so their records can be updated. Visit http://www.csao.org/t.tools/t17.onlinelearning/index.cfm?#whmis go to WHMIS update & review tab. Print the test results and card upon completion and have it signed by your employer, Peter Wall or the training coordinator. Please remember it is your responsibility to provide proof of training to the training coordinator if you want your records to be kept up to date.
- Apprentices that are scheduled for training but have already received
from another source must let the training coordinator know; otherwise
they will be scheduled to attend all mandatory training.
- Contact the training coordinator if you desire a copy of your
training records; which are kept on file and will be issued as
requested.
- The coordinator must be forwarded proof of training; this
is the only way a lost training card can be replaced without having
to re-take the course.
- Local 105 Hamilton Courses
- Local 105 offer a variety of courses. Provided there is
space in a class, our members are welcome to attend.
- In order to be reimbursed for the cost, approval must be received
from the JCB prior to booking.
- For additional information or to book a class please call the
local 105 training director; Clarke Hurley at 905 679-8880
- If we are to continue to bill ourselves as the best trained, safest
and most productive workforce; ongoing learning is essential.
This can be achieved by attending any courses that are currently offered,
attending courses offered by local 105, night courses or simply by
making it a habit to obtain and read industry specific literature.
This can be manufacturers' literature or trade publications.
