Training Report
The fall training schedule is now complete. It is unfortunate that more
members did not take advantage of the training offered. In the event that there
are still members interested in the Lockout & Tag there is a CSAO course being
offered at the local 105 training center (see schedule below)
Trainers - The training coordinator is looking for assistance in presenting
courses. If you are interested in becoming a trainer please contact him for
more details.

Spring Training |
| TRAINING COURSE | DATE | TIME | LOCATION | DETAILS |
| Code Update 2009 (Last course) | Jun.3, 2010 | 6:30pm | Canadian Corps Thorold (7 Clairmont) | |

Note:
- Confined Space and Lock & Tag courses are based on
the 2006 construction regulation, which contained significant changes.
If you received your training prior to that a refresher is recommended.
- Shock & Arc-flash is based upon the new CSA Z462
standard for workplace electrical safety for electricians.
- This is an excellent opportunity for our newly organized
members to bring their safety training up to date.
- For any course to run cost effectively we require a minimum
of ten participants.
- If you are interested in any course please leave your
name at the office so you can be advised when that course is scheduled.
Some courses (Broderson) have a limited number of spaces. Once
filled it is not possible to just drop in and attend. Book early!
- Courses are not only a place to receive information but
also a place to share information.
- Any suggestions on new courses to look into should go
to the JCB (via Peter).
- Provided there is sufficient interest we will endeavor
to set up or locate courses of interest to our members.
Other training notes:
- The spring edition of CSAO's Construction Safety Magazine contains
some interesting articles that impact us directly. Two of these
deal with fused meter leads and WHMIS. If you cannot access
a hard copy, the magazine can be downloaded at: http://www.csao.org/UploadFiles/Magazine/CS_Spring09.pdf.
Excerpts of these articles:
Fused leads: Investigations
carried out by ESA since 2002 have shown a trend for incidents involving
multimeters. About 80 percent of these incidents resulted in critical
injuries to the worker. Analysis indicates that user error
and internal component failure are the most common causes.
Steps that may be taken for better worker protection include using
fused leads and meters having the correct category rating for the
application.
WHMIS: Different systems
used to classify and label hazardous materials in countries that
trade with each other may be confusing and put workers at risk.
To resolve this problem the United Nations developed the Globally
Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labeling. GHS
should encourage consistency in classifying hazards and was supposed
to be adopted by Canada in 2008 however it was delayed. When implemented,
GHS will replace WHMIS in Ontario workplaces, including the construction
industry. More details on this change can be found at www.hc-sc.gc.ca
- Apprentices that are scheduled for training they have already received
from another source must let the training coordinator know; otherwise
they will be scheduled to attend all mandatory training.
- Anyone wishing a copy of his or her training record on file with
the training coordinator should contact Guy Brideau. Note this
is the only way a lost training card can be replaced without having
to re-take the course.
- Local 105 Hamilton Courses
- Local 105 offer a variety of courses. Provided there is
space in a class, our members are welcome to attend.
- In order to be reimbursed for the cost, approval must be received
from the JCB prior to booking.
- For additional information or to book a class please call the
local 105 training director; Clarke Hurley at 905 679-8880
- If we are to continue to bill ourselves as the best trained, safest
and most productive workforce; ongoing learning is essential.
This can be achieved by attending any courses that are currently offered,
attending courses offered by local 105, night courses or simply by
making it a habit to obtain and read industry specific literature.
This can be manufacturers' literature or trade publications.
